Erlend Oye - "Sheltered Life Remix / A Fine Night (A Cappella)"
JZ sent me this MP3 a couple of weeks ago. The track sounds like it was cut short from a dub-in mix but nonetheless, this bit of electro-pop is infectious! Erlend Oye, the mastermind behind Kings of Convenience (on the right), pours his honeyed (and very sexy) vocals over Depeche Mode-inflected dance-y synths. That voice...

The Shortwave Set - "Is It Any Wonder"
It's an off-beat track with plenty of hooks, swathed in beautiful melodies. It's futuristic pop cobbled from old LPs and antiquated instruments, where an antique victrola is paired off with a laptop -- and it's all the better for it. This is what they call "Victorian Funk" and I like it.

I strongly suggest you check back to PolloxNiner tomorrow -- it will be a MP3 blitz to ring in the New Year! Yay!

youll have everything you want...
only if you really want it

The Erlend Oye track comes from his DJ Kicks mix on !K7 records out of Germany. If you haven't got it, leave your house now - no, don't bother with a jacket - go down to your nearest record store and buy it. Because it's bloody essential and i haven't stopped listening to it in 2 years.

That's it! Thanks Rory!

Rory! This is one of the few DJ Kicks CDs off the series that I missed. I just bought myself a copy, thanks for the recommendation.

Wait till you hear the Smiths/Royksopp tune!
Is the Annie DJ Kicks any good?
Posted by: Young Poisoner | December 29, 2005 at 10:21 AM
Annie's DJ-Kicks is pretty good. It's a lot more saccharine than Erlend Oye's but it's still good. I recommend it. And it's got Datarock's "Fa Fa Fa" which is a damn good song if you know them.

Have you heard the other mixes for "Sheltered LIfe" :
Sheltered Life (Radio Edit)
Sheltered Life (Youngsters Remix) Sheltered Life (Erlend Oye's Karl Marx Allee Remix)
AWESOME!

I don't know. I didn't agree with all the hype that the Annie DJ Kicks CD got. It was too slow to be dancefloor music. And nothing was super catchy. If you like the sound of the Erlend Oye CD, then chances are you're going to dislike Annie's because it's as annoying as hell.
My two cents.

I prefer Erlend Oye's to Annie's too but I think it's because the mixing is far better on his.
If you're a fan of Anniemal you should go get her DJ Kicks. Song like Bumble Bee Unlimited's "Lady Bug" is perfect but the Royksopp tune doesn't do anything for me -- and I like Royksopp!
I'm not making a case for her so you should take it for what it's worth. If you've got $15 to blow, go for it.

Cool.. thanks for the tips! I love Anniemal, but you never know what you're going to get with DJ mixes. I still stand behind Weatherall's 9 O'Clock Drop as "Best DJ Mix EVER" though.

Dude! Andrew Weatherall is as close to heaven as you'll get. I've been listening to that CD non-stop for the past five years if that says something. Dominatrix Sleeps Tonight. Woot.
That CD made history for me.

How are you feeling today Sunny?
Any better?
Posted by: peter | December 29, 2005 at 12:14 PM
Hey Peter,
I'm on a dozen different types of cold meds so I'm high as a kite. Better!
Thanks for asking.

Sorry to hear you're under the weather.
Erlend Oye should perk you right up!

Both songs so good. "Victorian Funk" -- thought you were making that shit up but I looked it up. You're like a music nerd!
Hot.

I absolutely love the Shortwave Set - kinda like The Go Team! meets Bentley Rhythm Ace.
Posted by: Christopher | December 30, 2005 at 11:52 PM
Totally. Shortwave Set's got that same animation and funk of Bentley Rhythm Ace.
Whatever happened to them?
Posted by: Mark | December 31, 2005 at 02:35 AM
BRA kinda disappeared after they released For Your Ears Only in 2000. Although I appreciate the James Bond reference, the album wasn't very good, except for the single "Madam, Your Carriage Awaits."
