I couldn't think of a better way to start my morning off at the office after 3 short hours of sleep than with a dose of Ghostface Killah. I've been listening to his latest album Fishscale for weeks now and it's pretty dope through and through. If you haven't picked it up yet, do so and treat yourself to the flavors of Pete Rock, J Dilla, and MF Doom, among others. Plus, who else raps about the finer merits of his woman like Ghost?
*
Ghostface Killah - "Jellyfish"
*
*
I'm only of the lucky souls who's actually scored Radiohead tickets (I'm laughing on the inside), and I'm damn proud of it too. I've been sitting back and watching the blogosphere swell with an onslaught of Radiohead tracks (live! rare! acoustic! unreleased!) and I've become almost white-knuckled in restraining myself from posting yet another. But I can't anymore. I'm about to explode. But I figured I'd do it slightly different.
*
Cinematic Orchestra - "Exit Music (For A Film) Radiohead cover"
*
*
Big fan of Frou Frou. Slightly bigger fan of Imogen Heap, and of this particular song which, in this incarnation, is live and acoustic (piano) and completely beautiful. Personally, I can relate to this song as I've been thisclose to having a breakdown myself.
*
Imogen Heap - "Let Go (live)"
*
*
And to leave you dancing for the rest of the day, I have this utterly bonkers Serge Santiago remix of Sunshine Underground's "I Ain't Losing Any Sleep." Love the original but the remix is superb. Just check it out but don't tell anyone you got it from me.

I haven't had in a drink in two weeks, haven't done any sort of hanging out really. I've been super-focused. In fact, it's been this way for the past month since coming to terms with the fact that I need to work even harder, faster, better to achieve my goals. And I can only party as hard as I work. Which means that I'm going to party this weekend like it's the fucking end of the world. Woohoo! The Femme Generation boys blow into town -- they're playing a show at Pianos tomorrow night and open for Bishop Allen at his EP release show and party. Oh god, it's going to be a good show and Aaron promised me that he'd work on getting Bernard to scissor trip John on stage. Hahaha! Then we're gonna get tanked. More on this tomorrow.

I'm keeping this super short as I'm both busy and tired, a rather deadly combination if there ever was one for a Tuesday morning.

This past weekend, celebrating Mark's birthday, we didn't bother with the typical partying and redundancy of drinking until the point of puke. Okay, maybe a little but instead, we did this. So much fun and completely expensive but who cares. Lost my voice woohoo-ing all the while.
*
Also celebrating a birthday yesterday is Fluokids' Pharrell, who's done gone made a Sunny Mixtape comprised of some of his favorite dance tracks. You've probably heard most of these tracks by now but it's nice that he's compiled them into one mix for me. See below for the tracklisting. Also, his girlfriend shot the photo to the left. Feel free to hit her up here at [email protected] and let her know that you're always appreciative of photos of girls in their underthings.

Could it be? Is it Friday? You know what that means, don't you? It could only mean that it's the perfect time to get all Hall & Oates on you. Hells yeeea. This morning, I put my iPod on shuffle and this was the first song that played. H&O, as you know, being so square they're cool again. Well, actually the track I'm posting today isn't really Hall & Oates but rather a fantastic cover of one of their songs. Oh you're gonna want to download this one, for sure.

PJ Pooterhoots - "No Go"
First, the name: PJ Pooterhoots -- it's magic, innit? The man behind the clever name is a San Francisco DJ and disco house musichead who came to my attention with his No Go EP (Proptronix, 2005). Second, this cover of H&O's "I Can't Go For That" sounds like a rambunctious wet dream delicately sung by Japanese singer Kanoko (from Cinnamon). It's pulsating, mellow, and completely infectious. It begs for you to dance and sing along (which, er, I did this morning). Go to his myspace for more downloads.

Pharrell of Fluokids made me a "Sunny Mixtape" for me the other day -- really ace! -- but he's cleaning it up so I can post it here on PolloxNiner in the coming days. Watch out for it on Monday and be sure to bring extra underwear because you'll probably shit in them. Until then, my boy Pharrell is celebrating his birthday this weekend in France so be sure to head there and wish him a happy, happy birthday.

Also celebrating a birthday is my buddy Mark.jpg... better start running now...
Ghostface Killah - "The Forest"
Pharrell featuring Kanye West - "Number 1"

Half the fun being the drive itself, right? I created a playlist before we headed out, and on the drive I played him some new music from The Rapture, DJ Shadow, and Be Your Own Pet which he kept saying "oh shit" in response. I think he was pretty wowed by how a few tracks on the new DJ Shadow album completely throws you for a loop. Unexpectedly ethereal in comparison to the other tracks which are unapologetically in-your-face thunderous hip-hop tracks, these tracks are the result of some really gorgeous collabos and vocals.
*
*
But since I'm not posting any of it that today -- sorry but I will be posting soon -- I'll treat you with a little mixtape perfect for a long drive called "that B.I.G. mixtape" [mp3] mixed byDJ/producer my!gay!husband!. You can also check out his myspace here.

I left work yesterday and crawled over to my friend Ethan's apartment in the West Village. Baaarely. By the time he placed a call to the bistro around the corner for some delivery, I had already kicked off my shoes, changed into one of his T-shirts, and was sprawled over his couch sleeping like a log. Ethan takes good care of me, and always tends to give more than he takes. Wish more people were like that. Anyhoo, maybe it's all this rainy weather or the fact that I'm working outrageously hard these days but I was nodding off like a shameless heroin addict last night. Boy did that nap feel good.
*
Which brings me to my next point: I need interns. If you're interested in interning for me at Universal Music Group in A&R, please email me at [email protected].
*
Sooo I'm still sort of tired (which is why I'm keeping this post so short) but I'm in a great mood so it all balances out at the end of the day. Here are some of my latest favorites playing on my speakers this morning -- all delicate vocals, perfect for a grey day like today:

Camille - "La Jeune Fille Aux Cheveux Blancs"
Lily Allen - "Little Things"

Not too long ago, PolloxNiner's tagline used to be: "Been Partying Too Much And Now I'm Trying So Hard To Stay Awake..." Needless to say, I've had to master the art of sleeping with my eyes open.
*
However, those days are over... I mean, sorta.
*
It's not that I don't go to parties and have a grand ole time, sure I do. But it just doesn't appeal to me as much as being one-on-one or with a small group of friends doing stupid shit. What kind of stupid shit? Like letting two guys cut my hair at the same time last night. (From the front it looks fine but I hope to God that the two sides are actually even from behind.) But a good party really depends on who's there, what the music is like... all the right factors need to be in place or else it's bust. Of course, I'm saying all this after Friday night's shindig which was crazy stupid fun. No details of that party shall ever be spoken of. (Right Meredith?)
*
*
Speaking of party girl, I spent much of the weekend with my family for Mother's Day and chatted up my mom. She never ceases to amaze me. Yesterday, she starts talking about music and how she's looking for some Tiefschwarz. TIEFSCHWARZ!?? Mom?? So we went shopping and bought her a crap load of music including The Knife, Carl Craig, Alan Braxe, Todd Terje, and Riton. I guess the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree, huh?
*
So... this is for my mom:
Electronic - "Getting Away With It (Extended Version)"
Todd Terje - "Eurodans"
Riton - "Angerman (Riton Re-rub)"
*
The Riton "Angerman re-rub" is pretty wicked, and I love how it just creeps up on you and then explodes into some full-throttle mindfuck. It's all lightning and thunder whereas Todd Terje's "Eurodans" is like light rain. Different but completely complimentary to each other. Electronic's "Getting Away With It" is just a great song that I know she likes so there.

You know when you order something on the internet-- you pay for it, wait for it, forget it. And then, it arrives and you kind of wonder what it is. It's like Christmas, you know? It's exciting! You know you paid for it at one point, yet you can't really remember that. It's as if someone just sent you all this great stuff.
Well, it happened again. I had to get back to Sweden to fix some things, and this package was waiting for me. Turned out it was, among other things, two Jeans Team singles I had completely forgotten about. Hi Fans and Ein Atom were the first two Jeans Team releases and you can pretty much hear where they were heading..
So-- naïve, happy, elegant, electro-punk. This is where it began:
*
"Hi Fans" - Jeans Team from Hi Fans 7"
"Hi Friends" - Jeans Team from Ein Atom 7"
"Ein Atom" - Jeans Team from Ein Atom 7"
*
And some other stuff that I like (it's been two weeks after all)...

I'm going to rant a little today. If you'd rather skip all my babble and just get to the downloading, feel free to scroll down a bit and download till your heart's content (*cough*douchebag*cough*). Otherwise, indulge me a little.
*
So it's been busy and I'm glad it's Mother's Day weekend because it's been a while since I've seen my parents. Plus, there's something refreshing about going home -- my mom and dad could careless if I work in music or walk on water like Jesus. I'll always be their troublemaking little girl. So speaking of Jesus, Thurston Moore comes into the office the other day and we're chatting on the couch, right, but the only thought running through my head is "geez, he's tall, I wonder how tall he is because he looks really tall, and I wonder why I never really noticed just how tall he is until now, even though I've seen Sonic Youth like a billion times..." I kept staring at the top of his head and I'm pretty sure he got to wondering why I was eyeballing his head. Remind me to apologize to him the next time he calls. I'm an idiot.
*
I've been working harder than I ever have before in my entire life which is saying a lot. But it doesn't feel like work because my boss Andrew rules, the people I work with are super cool, the artists/bands I work with are some of my heroes, and the music is amazing.
*
Despite the hard work (or maybe because of it), I've been heading out to shows galore. I won't bother regurgitating all the blog reviews but most notable among them are Wednesday's Beruit (at the Knitting Factory) and Phoenix (at the Bowery Ballroom) shows. Most of you know I've harbored something of a shameless Phoenix obsession for years so needless to say, that show was flawless to me. Beirut, however, had a shaky start but all told, offered a great show. Aside from all the Beirut buzz, I'm completely wowed by him, a one-man band -- 19-year old Zach Condon -- who's so good it hurts me in 28 different ways. I know you all are going bonkers over Cold War Kids, and for a lingering moment a couple of months ago, I did too and posted a couple of their songs. But get over it. Eeesh.
*
Beirut, on the other hand, promises to only get better by the time he's legal to drink at his own shows. My buddy James puts it nicely and I completely agree Beirut shouldn't be compared to Neutral Milk Hotel simply because it's a lazy comparison. I'm thinking more Devotchka or Magnetic Fields. In any case, here's his myspace.
*
Beirut - "Postcards From Italy"
Beirut - "Mount Wroclai (Idle Days)"
*
Buy the album Gulag Orkestar here.
*
Other bands I'm listening to this week include The Mugs, The Futureheads (of course), Foreign Islands, Tokyo Police Club, Mapstation, The Television Personalities, Favourite Sons, and yes, Snow Patrol.
*
*
On the electronic front, this bit of boogie-down disco by Al Usher (released on Ewan Pearson's label Misericord) has been playing on my iPod and computer for the past few days since it magically fell into my lap like manna from heaven. You'll be sorry if you don't download this because try as you might, you'll not find it elsewhere. And I'm not going to repost it so get it now.
*
Al Usher - "Gnanfou"

I slept with the window slightly open and my apartment smelled like fresh rain in the morning. I love it. If you have some spare time and like reading rants, a blog I recommend is London Cokehead, the diary of a UK music producer/engineer. I like reading his heated diatribes about things like Cubase and Pro Tools vs. Logic (agreed, hardly anyone uses Cubase or Pro Tools in the studio... what is this? 1999??). Otherwise, have a great weekend and happy Mother's Day, mom!

Ever since I posted this song a few weeks ago, I've received something like 60 emails and comments asking for me to repost it. I hate reposting songs. But then again, this IS a really great song and quite the rarity. Plus, it's quite befitting for today's post since lyrically, the song exposes some really exquisite and lovely sentiments. You can stream the original at Grandadbob's myspace or this remix at Al Usher's myspace.
